Craig's List scam averted

Police are advising the public of a rental property scam that may be appearing on Craig's List.

Police are advising the public of a rental property scam that may be appearing on Craig's List.

Recently a Prince George resident ran a Craig's List ad seeking a rental property and was contacted by an individual stating he was from Washington State and had a residence on 11th Avenue here in Prince George to rent for $800 a month.

The potential renter inquired before wiring money through Western Union and discovered the house was not for rent. Had she deposited this money, it would have been lost.

The individual presently living at this residence on 11th Avenue said a foreign student had lost a deposit of $1,000 thinking she was renting this same residence.

"In many cases, funds have been sent out of country, nothing can be done," states an RCMP news release.

Anyone believing they have been the victim of a fraud or scam is asked to contact the local RCMP with details.

Individuals can also visit the federal government's Canadian anti-fraud Centre website at www.phonebusters.com/english/home-eng.html.

Anyone with information about this or any other criminal offence is asked to contact the Prince George RCMP at (250)561-3300 or anonymously call Crime Stoppers at 1 (800)222-TIPS (8477), or go on line to www.pgcrimestoppers.bc.ca.
