COVID cases rise in the north, as B.C. imposes a mask mandate

There are more than 300 active COVID-19 cases in northern B.C.

As of Tuesday, there were more then 300 active cases of COVID-19 in the Northern Health region.

The B.C. Ministry of Health reported 39 new cases in the region on Tuesday, bringing the number of active cases up to 308, up from 298 on Monday. Seven people in the region were hospitalized with COVID-19, according to B.C. Centre for Disease Control data, all of which were listed in intensive care.

No new COVID-related deaths were reported on Tuesday, leaving the province’s death toll from the pandemic at 1,801 – including 160 people from the Northern Health region.

As of Tuesday, 83.3 per cent of eligible British Columbians (ages 12 and up) had received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, and 75.1 per cent were fully vaccinated. As of Tuesday, a total of 7.35 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine had been administered in the province, including 320,018 in the Northern Health region.

B.C. reported a total of 641 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, as provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced a new mask mandate in indoor public spaces.

In a statement issued on Tuesday afternoon, the City of Prince George said anyone not wearing a mask inside indoor civic facilities will be denied entry or asked to leave immediately by staff, regardless of their vaccination status.
