COVID cases continue to rise in Northern Health region

The number of active cases in the region hit 197 on Monday, according to B.C. Centre for Disease Control information

A total of 74 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the Northern Health region over the weekend.

The number of active cases in the north continued to rise, growing to 197 active cases on Monday – up from 163 on Friday.  The number of active cases in the region are the highest they have been in months.

There were two people hospitalized in the region with COVID-19 according to data released by the B.C. Centre for Disease Control. Both were listed in intensive care.

A single COVID-related death was reported in the province over the weekend, in the Interior Health region. B.C.’s death toll from the pandemic rose to 1,780, including 159 residents of the Northern Health region.

Across B.C., a total of 1,434 new cases of COVID-19 were reported over the weekend, and the number of active cases rose to 5,090. More than half the new cases in B.C. were linked to outbreaks in the Interior Health region, where 2,982 of the current active cases were located as of Monday.

A total of 104 people in B.C. were hospitalized with COVID-19, of which 47 were in intensive care.

As of Monday, 82.6 per cent of eligible British Columbians (ages 12 and up) had received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, and 73.2 per cent were fully vaccinated.

A total of 7.23 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine had been administered in B.C. as of Monday, including 313,265 doses in the Northern Health region.

Since the beginning of the pandemic there have been 8,128 cases of COVID-19 in the north, of which 7,770 people have recovered.
