COVID-19 pandemic claims another life in northern B.C.

The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed another life in the Northern Health region.

The death was reported by the B.C. Ministry of Health on Thursday and brings the regions death toll from the pandemic to 160. A total of 1,784 British Columbians have died as a result of the pandemic.

The ministry reported 27 new cases of COVID-19 in northern B.C. on Thursday. The number of active cases in the region rose to 239, up from 230 on Wednesday.

The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 in the north grew by three, to a total of seven – including four in critical care, according to B.C. Centre for Disease Control data.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been 8,226 cases of COVID-19 in the Northern Health region, of which 7,824 have recovered.

Last week there were 59 new cases reported in the Prince George local health area, according to B.C. CDC data. The Prince George local health area includes Prince George, Mackenzie and the Robson Valley.

As of Thursday, 82.9 per cent of eligible British Columbians (ages 12 and up) have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, and 74 per cent were fully vaccinated. A total of 7.28 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in the province, including 315,902 doses in the Northern Health region.

As of Monday, 75 per cent of eligible people in the Prince George local health area had received at least one dose, and 64 per cent fully vaccinated, the B.C. CDC reported.

A total of 689 new cases were reported in the province on Thursday, bringing the number of active cases up to 5,982. A total of 121 people were hospitalized with the disease, including 56 in critical care.
