COVID-19 cases continue to rise in northern B.C.

One hundred new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the Northern Health region over the weekend, according to data released by the B.C. Ministry of Health on Monday.

The number of active cases in the north increased to 298, up 17 per cent from Friday. Seven people were hospitalized with COVID-19 in the region, with six of those people in intensive care, according to B.C. Centre for Disease Control data.

Sixteen new COVID-related deaths were reported in B.C. over the weekend, 14 of which were in the Interior Health region. The other two were in Fraser Health and Island Health.

The province’s death toll from the pandemic rose to 1,801, including 160 residents of northern B.C.

As of Monday, 82.3 per cent of eligible British Columbians (ages 12 and up) had received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, and 74.9 per cent were fully vaccinated.

As of Aug. 19, 76 per cent of eligible people in the Prince George local health area – which includes Mackenzie and the Robson Valley – had received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, and 65 per cent were fully vaccinated.

A total of 7.33 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in B.C., including 319,326 in the Northern Health region.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 8,364 COVID-19 cases in the Northern Health region, of which 7,902 people have recovered.

Over the weekend, 1,711 new COVID-19 cases were reported throughout the province. There was a total of 5,056 active cases and 133 people hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Monday, including 80 people in intensive care.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 160,630 cases of COVID-19 in B.C., of which 153,627 people have recovered.

Between Aug. 11 and Aug. 17, 71 per cent (2,620 cases) of new COVID-19 cases were among unvaccinated people, 16 per cent (583 cases) were among partially vaccinated people and 13 per cent (498 cases) among fully-vaccinated people, according to Ministry of Health data.

During the same period, 84 per cent of people hospitalized with COVID-19 were unvaccinated, five per cent were partially vaccinated and 11 per cent were fully vaccinated.
