Courthouse gets new recruits

The Prince George Courthouse will soon have four new faces on staff.

The Prince George Courthouse will soon have four new faces on staff.

"Thirty-four deputy sheriffs have graduated from the Justice Institute of BC, with four of these new recruits set to begin their service at the Prince George Courthouse," said Solicitor General Shirley Bond.

According to government statistics, more than 460 sheriffs work in 45 courthouses and 44 circuit courts in communities across British Columbia. Their main responsibilities include:

providing prisoner escorts between court, correctional centres and police lock-up facilities;

courthouse and courtroom security, including the management of courthouse lock-up facilities;

jury management; and providing close personal protection services to government, as well as threat assessment to ministries.

"These new recruits will make a meaningful and measurable contribution to our courthouse in Prince George," said Bond. "I want to congratulate the new sheriffs and thank them for pursuing an important career within B.C.'s justice system."

Fellow Prince George MLA Pat Bell added, "Whenever additional resources can be added to help our local justice system it's a good investment. Getting four additional sheriffs is great news for courtrooms in Prince George."

The next call for applications to the Justice Institute's sheriff training program will be in January. Anyone interested is asked to check the institute's website.
