Low-income families and seniors can get some help to buy fresh food from the Prince George Farmers' Market.
The farmers' market nutrition program provides participants with $15 per week in coupons that can be exchanged for locally-grown products, including fruits, vegetables, fresh herbs, meat, eggs and cheese.
The program runs from June to October this year.
PGFMA vice president Lois Westgate, who has coordinated the program for the last two years, and is planning on bringing in a new component for 2016 - cooking demonstrations.
"It's not simply about accessing healthy food, but also learning what to do with it at home. How do you cook it? What goes well together? How can you make easy, quick nutritious meals?" said Westgate. "So, I thought it would be great for the market to host demonstrations that highlight how to use various products at the market."
Last year, the program provided families with just over $21,000 worth of help in partnership with such organizations as the Native Friendship Centre and Baby's New Beginnings.
The Prince George Farmers' Market is open every Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. to 2p.m. year-round, and is located on Sixth Avenue (the green building behind the Keg).
