Prince George's downtown will soon be home to a late-night eatery and craft beer spot.
Kask Taproom & Eatery needs approval from city council before it can proceed with a late-night liquor license on Friday's and Saturdays.
The Liquor Control and Licensing Branch is the authority for liquor licensing approvals.
"For Food Primary establishments that request hours of service past midnight, the LCLB requires that the local government reviews the application, gathers the views of residents that will be affected by the proposed amendment and passes a resolution on the application," the staff report noted. The request focused on Friday and Saturday, to push the hours to 3 a.m.
At Monday's meeting city council unanimously approved the application to extend the hours of liquor service past midnight.
The applicant, Ross Birchall, spoke to council briefly and said he's excited to "get a business running which is great for downtown."
He said it will likely be open from Tuesday to Saturday, evenings from 4 p.m. to midnight, with hopefully a lunch service later on.
An early restaurant layout shows it can serve about 60 people and could fit up to 10 staff, for a total "occupant load" of 70 people.
Staff said the location downtown means the hours extension won't affect the area.
"The impacts will be minimal," said Ian Wells, the city's general manager of planning and development.
The eatery falls in line with the city's strategic priorities, to "advance progress in the downtown" because it will help a new business move into the city's downtown core.
"I'm super excited about this and I want to thank more intrepid entrepreneurs for revitalizing our downtown. I'm happy to support this," Coun. Terri McConnachie said.
