Two new liquor licences for downtown Prince George have received city council's nod of approval.

Nancy O's Restaurant on Third Avenue requested city support for a liquor-primary licence to compliment live entertainment.

Co-owners Garrett Fedorkiw and Eoin Foley said they've had to turn customers away unless they order food because of their current food-primary liquor licence.

"Late at night we offer live entertainment in the form of live music and comedians," Fedorkiw said. "We need this to expand our entertainment offerings."

Learn to Earn Bartending School on Third Avenue also sought city council's approval for a liquor-primary licence.

"I teach the bartending school during the day, and then on Saturdays they move over and learn in a real bar situation," Learn to Earn owner Linda Allen said.

The bartending school has held regular gay and lesbian-friendly dances on weekends with special event liquor licenses.

Allen said the liquor licence will allow the creation of a gay and lesbian-friendly bar, the Lamda Caberet.

Council approved both requests unanimously. Final approval of liquor licences is up to the B.C. Liquor Control Board.

Mayor Dan Rogers said although the two applications are good news for downtown, there is a need to consider the number of liquor licences downtown.

"We've seen an improvement downtown since we've reduced the number of [liquor service] seats downtown," Rogers said.
