A proposal to rezone 23 hectares in the Hart for a major residential subdivision will go to a public hearing.

City council gave related bylaws for the project second reading on Monday night.

The project calls for a subdivision holding more than 100 lots in an area bound by Kelly Road North, Zral Road and Venta Drive.

Council threw its support behind Pacific Western Brewing's quest for a licence to sell alcohol out of its lounge.

The provincial government's liquor control and licensing board will make the final decision on whether to grant the licence.

Council passed through third reading a bylaw to establish a zone for small-scale breweries, distilleries, wineries and cideries in urban Prince George.

Currently, brewing and distilling are allowed only on heavy industrial property and wine and cider-making on land zoned general agriculture.

The manufacturing area for the so-called microbreweries and distilleries would be limited to 205 square metres and for wineries and cideries to 300 square metres.

The operations would still have to get permission from the B.C. Liquor Control and Licencing Board to sell from their premises and that process includes a referral to city council.

In March, city council granted Crossroads Brewery a one-year temporary-use permit to run a microbrewery at its spot at Fifth Avenue and George Street in the old Foodteller restaurant.

A "red dress" event to commemorate the women who've gone missing or have been murdered along the Highway of Tears will be held this fall.

On Oct. 2 at 1:30 p.m., volunteers will line up along Highway 16 West, each one holding a red dress.

A candlelight vigil will follow at Lheidli T'enneh Memorial Park where the dresses will also be put on display.

City council approved a $500 grant for the event during Monday night's council meeting.

The Fraser Basin Council is aiming for mid-October to release a stewardship strategy for the Nechako watershed.

It will be the culmination of a process that began four years ago when the Nechako Watershed Roundtable and Strategy Initiative was first formed to better coordinate resources, FBC assistant regional manager Theresa Fresco told city council during a presentation.

From there, work will begin on pursuing funding to pursue the strategy, Fresco said.

Achievements so far include completion of a "health atlas" for the watershed, now online.

Originally known as the Nechako Watershed Alliance, its core group is made up of representatives of local governments, First Nations and non-profit agencies.

Representatives from Rio Tinto-Alcan sit on the broader roundtable group and the technical advisory committee.

The Northern Undergraduate Student Society secured $1,500 in sponsorship money from city council for its annual Backyard Barbeque.

It was half the amount NUGSS was seeking for the event, held every September at the University of Northern British Columbia.
