High water has forced closure of the island at Cottonwood Island Nature Park.

The city has closed the island in Cottonwood Island Nature Park due to rising water from the Nechako River.

"Staff have placed signs and barricades at locations including the Replica Bridge and the recently constructed bridge in the west end of the park," city hall said in an notice issued shortly after noon.

"Access to the canoe launch and a small area just north of the railway bridge is also blocked.

"Currently, the main closure is limited to the island in the park, but staff are continuing to monitor river levels and, if necessary, may close the rest of the park, parts of the Heritage River Trail, and other parks along the rivers."

The weather might provide a brief reprieve. Environment Canada called off a special weather statement for Prince George late Wednesday afternoon, roughly a day after warning rainfall significant enough to add to the high water was on its way.

However, highs are forecast to rise above 20 C for the weekend, delivering more snow-melting warmth.

On Monday, the River Forecast Centre issued a high streamflow advisory for the Nechako River and an evacuation alert Fraser-Fort George Regional District issued last week for for 39 homes on Upper Mud River Road remained in effect. The high water has hit a business in Cluculz Lake business particularly hard.

"The water is not cooperating," The Cabin Restaurant and General Store said in a social media posting. "We will be closed until further notice. Thanks for all your care and concern. We will keep you posted."
