Citizens on Patrol (COP) will be a lot more visible as they circulate through the city.
The team of local volunteers has been outfitted in new jackets provided by ICBC, since one of the chief jobs they do is look for stolen vehicles.
"Citizens on Patrol are a dedicated group of local volunteers who patrol the Prince George detachment area becoming extra eyes and ears for the RCMP," said Cpl. Carissa Hornoi, the Mountie in charge of community policing in Prince George. "They search license plates on
a laptop to check for stolen vehicles, report suspicious activity, erratic driving, and issue crime prevention notices."
"The jackets are a generous donation and will help the public identify us as [COP] volunteers, helping out in the community and assisting the RCMP in providing a safer community", said Mike Burt, COP volunteer program co-ordinator.
"Citizens on Patrol have done a terrific job with over 5,300 plates checked and 97 patrol hours for the period between April and June, 2011," said Diana Pozer with ICBC. "We wanted to thank and reward the volunteers for their hard work and the jackets are a great way to support them."
The Community Policing Centre is currently recruiting volunteers for Citizens on Patrol and has many other exciting opportunities for individuals to make a positive difference in our community. Call (250) 561-3366 for more information.
