Smoke and flames may be visible from Highway 16 West and Blackwater Road as the B.C. Wildfire Service conducts a series of open burns starting Wednesday to reduce forest fire threats.

It will cover about 3.8 hectares north of Frenkel Road, near the city's southern boundary, and will continue periodically until October 31.

"The goal of this project is to mitigate wildfire hazards and reduce the threat of interface wildfires in this area, by removing lower tree branches (ladder fuels) and accumulations of forest fuels on the ground," BCWS said in a news release.

"The exact timing of these burns will depend on weather, site conditions and crew availability. They will proceed only if conditions are suitable and allow for quick smoke dissipation and low-to-moderate fire intensity.

"Once the debris piles are ignited, the intention is to extinguish them within 24 hours."

Trained crews will control and monitor the fires at all times, the BCWS added.
