BC Wildfire Service will burn about 40 hectares near Mackenzie next week in an effort to reduce the area's wildfire risk.
The go-ahead for the controlled burn - expected to be from Sept. 19 to 23 - will depend on favourable weather and site conditions.
"The introduction of managed fire to these areas will help restore ecosystems and maintain plant communities that are native to the area," Tuesday's release said. "These managed fires will also reduce the amount of forests fuels and decrease the risk of devastating wildfires in future."
Trained workers will manage the fire at the 52.3-kilometre mark on West Parsnip Forest Service Road and Ministry of Forests staff will also monitor it.
A ministry fact sheet reminded residents that fire is a natural process in an ecosystem.
"Many species of plants, birds, insects and other animals depend on fire for its regenerative properties," it said, adding fire is part of land management.
