Construction begins on downtown bioenergy system

Construction on the city's downtown Renewable Energy System began at Second Avenue and George Street Monday morning. The project, which will link the courts at Plaza 400, is expected to be complete by October.

Construction on the city's downtown Renewable Energy System began at Second Avenue and George Street Monday morning. The project, which will link the courts at Plaza 400, is expected to be complete by October.

Then the two provincial buildings will begin using the hot-water utility that already connects nine other buildings. The Renewable Energy System runs off of thermal energy using sawmill residue from Lakeland Mills Ltd.

Last month the province and city announced the project, which will cost about $450,000.

City crews will need to remove road structure and concrete curb and gutters, excavate for installation of piping system to buildings, reconstruct the raod and concrete curb and gutters and then address any disturbed landscaped.

The City of Prince George said throughout the summer traffic will be affected at the following locations between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Street parking may be restricted during construction, but sidewalk use will be maintained for pedestrian access to businesses.

- Second Avenue and George Street

- Fifth Avenue and George Street

- One block of Fifth Avenue between George Street and Queensway

- The intersection of Fifth Ave. and Queensway.
