The contest within the Conservative Party of Canada is now officially on in the riding of Prince George-Peace River.
The spot is currently held by veteran MP Jay Hill, now retiring. The Citizen learned only moments ago that the party had finally called a highly anticipated opening to the nomination period. This will be open until Feb. 14 when all candidates must be declared.
Following this, a campaign period begins whereby all the hopefuls attempt to sign up voting members to the party and prevail in their internal vote.
That winning candidate must then square off in a by-election against all other political party and independent candidates, unless a full general election is triggered first.
To date, six candidates have put their name in for the Conservative nomination.
They include former-Prince George mayor Colin Kinsley and current Prince George city councillor Cameron Stolz. Also in the running are Bob Zimmer, Dan Davies, Don Irwin, all from Fort St. John; and Jerrilyn Schembri, who is from Tumbler Ridge.
