Central interior sawmiller Conifex Timber Inc. was the winner in the new exporter category of this year's Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME) B.C. export awards.

"After starting up in 2008 with just one employee, Conifex now employs about 450 people directly and has experienced exponential growth in export sales," the CME said in a statement.

It operates a sawmill in Fort St. James and a two-mill complex in Mackenzie and now produces 745 million board feet of primary structural grade spruce-pine-fir dimension lumber.

Prince George-based Canfor Pulp Limited Partnership was a finalist in the primary products and resources category

The award winners were announced Oct. 28.
