British Columbians are invited to comment on a proposed new provincial law meant to simplify the process for those who are owed money to collect the funds.
Even once judgment saying a debtor must pay up has been obtained, a creditor must currently still apply for permission to use any of the number of methods allowed to collect the money owed.
The proposed Enforcement of Money Judgments Act will eliminate that need to apply multiple times if wages must be garnished.
It will also protect debtors by expanding the number of items exempt from seizure and imposing an obligation that enforcement be conducted in a reasonable manner, the Ministry of Justice said in a bulletin issued Friday
