Internationally-syndicated columnist, author and Academy Award-nominated broadcaster Gwynne Dyer will be giving a free public lecture at UNBC on Thursday evening.
The lecture, entitled Remembrance: What the First World War Taught Us, is based on Dyer's new book Canada In the Great Power Game 1914-2014.
The lecture is being hosted by UNBC's College of Arts, Social and Health Sciences and the Geoffrey R. Weller Library.
"I really wanted to have him here around Remembrance Day," UNBC librarian Allan Wilson said.
The First World War was a defining moment in Canadian history, Wilson said.
During the lecture there will be a slide presentation of historic photos and other information from the university's archives, he added.
While there is no cost for the lecture, the UNBC library will reserve seats in exchange for donations to support the library's archives.
"It's really to make people aware... 90 per cent of the archive is unknown," he said. "You receive new material, but you don't always get to catalog and digitalize it."
Dyer's speech will start at 7 p.m. at the Canfor Theatre at UNBC.
His biweekly columns on current affairs run in 175 newspapers around the world.
He has a PhD in military and middle eastern history from the University of London, and held academic appointments at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and Oxford University. He has served in three navies
His TV documentary series War was aired in 45 countries and one of the seven-part series was nominated for an Academy Award. He is the author of numerous books and several TV and radio productions.
