The College of New Caledonia is offering working professionals a chance to learn the basics of web and graphic design while still working full time.
Starting in September, the college will be offering a citation program in Foundations of Web and Graphic Design, according to a statement released by CNC. The part-time program will be offered during the evening to accommodate working students.
"This program is ideal for business owners and professionals who are responsible for company websites and print materials as well as creative people who want an internet or graphic design career," said Kim Stewart, instructor and program coordinator. "Graphic design and the internet touch a part of almost everything we do these days, from apps for your phone, to movies, entertainment and product packaging. A person with these skills will be highly desirable in today's job market."
The program is made up of four courses: Introduction to Design Thinking, Introduction to Web Design, Introduction to Visual Communication and Intermediate Web Design.
"The four course citation running in the evenings is a perfect bite-size introduction to creative graphic design and web for busy students and professionals," Stewart said.
Students who register by July 11 to start classes in September will receive a $200 bursary toward the $595 tuition cost of each course, while those who register between July 12 and Aug. 12 will receive $100 toward the cost of each course.
Students registering for spring courses between July 12 and Nov. 25 will receive $100 toward the cost of each course.
Web instructor Sean Siddals said the citation program is a great opportunity for people to diversify themselves in a competitive job market.
"Developing a solid foundation in web and graphic design can make you that much more competitive in a difficult job market," Siddals said. "Being able to develop your own website and other promotional materials is a huge advantage."
Randall Heidt, CNC executive director of external relations, said the college is considering offering additional web and graphic design programs aimed at professionals in the future.
"We're also looking at going to a certificate [program] and a diploma [program] as well," Heidt said. "And this would ladder into that."
