The story of suspected serial killer Cody Legebokoff, the accused killer of four Central Interior women, has now been aired by CNN.
The international news network sent a team of reporters to the Prince George area in November to film people and places connected with the story. This past Friday the feature segment aired on the "Anderson Cooper 360" program.
"We had a very good reaction to it. It was the piece that sparked the most interest that night, the ratings were very strong for it," said Emmy-winning reporter Tom Foreman, the lead correspondent for the story. He was joined on the trip by producer Katie Ross and photojournalist John Bena.
Legebokoff faces four charges of first degree murder in the deaths of Jill Stacey Stuchenko, 35, Cynthia Frances Maas, 35, Loren Donn Leslie, 15, and the disappearance of Natasha Lynn Montgomery, 23.
"I think people here were interested in it for the same reasons you are locally," Foreman said. "It is an interesting and tragic story."
According to CNN's research, Legebokoff would be, if court proceedings result in a finding of guilt, the youngest serial killer in Canadian history. His allegations stem from 2009-10, starting when he was 19 years old. The CNN crew traced his young life back to his roots in Fort St. James, and his later years in Prince George. They went to some of the places where his alleged victims were found (one body, that of Montgomery, has yet to be located). They spoke with the father of Leslie, the last victim attached to his suspected spree. They also interviewed a former FBI profiler who gave some insights into the minds of serial killers.
"We will obviously keep track of the story and keep the audience updated," Foreman said. "There is a real commitment on the part of the show to make sure there is a middle and an end to our stories, not just the beginning. When and if it goes to trial we will see what happens then."
Legebokoff will be back in court soon for pre-trial proceedings. A publication ban has been imposed on many of the details, pending a full trial at a time not yet determined.
