The College of New Caledonia's medical laboratory technology program is opening its doors to the public on Wednesday.
Everyone is invited to talk to the students and instructors and check out some of the tests they perform from 12:30 p.m. - 2 p.m. in the lab, room. 3-227 on the third floor.
"The open house will consist of students working in groups and presenting one of the main disciplines of med lab technology: clinical chemistry, hematology, histology, transfusion services (blood bank) and microbiology," said instructor Chris Taruc.
"The groups of students will be situated around the lab and visitors will rotate between the different demonstrations."
CNC's third class of medical laboratory technologists is about to graduate in May after completing the college's two-and-a-half-year diploma program.
Med lab techs perform a variety of specialized tests to help physicians diagnose, treat and prevent disease. They collect and prepare specimens for analysis; testing blood, body fluids and tissue samples and interpreting results.
"The open house is a great way for the public to see what our students are learning and how they will eventually contribute to providing top-notch health care to B.C. residents," said CNC communications director Randall Heidt. "Or, if people are looking for a career change and not sure what med lab technologists do, this is a great opportunity to see it firsthand."
