CNC, instructors come to agreement

The College of New Caledonia Faculty Association has reached a tentative agreement on the final piece of their deal with the college.

Association members will vote on this portion of the new agreement during their April 27 annual general meeting. Their previous two-year collective agreement expired March 31, 2012.

After coming to an agreement on compensation at the provincial table in February, this portion deals with local issues, such as workloads and assignments, explained association president David Rourke.

"For a fairly long time, there have been a number of issues related to par- time employees, part-time faculty and contingent faculty. And we want to focus on their issues because they make up a significant portion of our bargaining unit," he said, but since the money discussions were already wrapped up, the group focused on rights issues.

"We thank and congratulate the local and provincial bargaining teams for their efforts in reaching a successful conclusion to these negotiations," said Rourke, whose association represents more than 475 part-time and full-time instructors.

The February compensation agreement offered four salary scale increases in one per cent increments, the first retroactive to Jan. 1, for 10 participating locals in the Federation of Post Secondary Educators.

"We are delighted that we were able to reach an agreement and hope it's ratified by faculty association members in the near future," said CNC human resources director Sandra Rossi.

If the contract is ratified by the association membership, it will go on for approval by the college's board of governors and eventually get final approval by the Post-Secondary Employers' Association.
