The culinary community is getting behind one of their own as she faces a challenge far greater than earning her red seal.
Former College of New Caledonia (CNC) student Reena Thomas was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.
Ron Christian, a CNC culinary arts instructor, taught Thomas five years ago at the school and also works with her at the Riverstone Bar and Grill where the 25-year-old Thomas manages the kitchen.
"She's just a good, hard worker," Christian said. "I wish there was more."
Christian said he was crushed when he learned of Thomas' diagnosis. "You can be as fit as a fiddle, until they tell you otherwise. And they told her otherwise," he said. "I was bawling my eyes out, but she was strong as can be."
In order to support the Vanderhoof native and current Prince George resident as she prepares to undergo surgery on Sept. 25, the Riverstone is hosting a fundraising dinner Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.
According to Christian, there are only about 15 of the $20 tickets left for the 160 seat buffet meal. All the money raised from the dinner as well as upcoming fireman's car wash and bake sale will go to Thomas and her family to help pay for her treatments.
"I'm pulling for her big time and so is everybody else," Christian said.
