Civic Centre reno plans shown off in open house

Residents can get a peek at renovation plans for the Civic Centre Plaza at an open house event on Aug. 20.

Residents can get a peek at renovation plans for the Civic Centre Plaza at an open house event on Aug. 20.

The redevelopment aims to give the site a facelift by narrowing the entrance along Ninth Avenue, incorporating more public art and adding green space. The existing skating rink and splash pad will be maintained.

No design plan has been finalized yet, but two contenders have been announced. The first, called The River, is a flowing design which touches on the city's connection to the Fraser and Nechako rivers. The second finalist, called The Cell, is a more block-like concept which harkens to the city's roots in the forestry and resource sector.

The open house is scheduled to run from noon to 2 p.m. and again from 5 to 7 p.m. in rooms 201, 202 and 203 at the Civic Centre on Aug. 20.

A presentation is expected to be made at city council on Aug. 19.

The design consultants will be on hand at the meeting to answer questions.

The changes are planned in advance of the 2015 Canada Winter Games and will include a podium for medal presentations.

After the games are done the plaza will continue to bear the Canada Winter Games name as a lasting legacy.

The City of Prince George, the 100th anniversary committee and the 2015 Canada Winter Games are working together on the plaza renovations.
