The city's unemployment rate stood at 6.5 per cent in October, according to Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers released Friday.

That's down slightly from 6.6 for the same month last year, but the number of residents holding down jobs also declined slightly, to 47,400 from 48,000 while the number of people unemployed and not seeking work was 21,500 or 1,000 more.

Those looking for work totaled 3,300, or 100 fewer than in October 2015.

The unemployment figure for the most recent month is accurate to within plus or minus one percentage point, 68 per cent of the time.

In September, the unemployment rate was 6.1 per cent with 48,000 working, 3,100 looking for work and 21,200 not participating.

The numbers are based on a three-month rolling average and do not separate part-time from full-time work.
