The city's unemployment rate stood at 5.3 per cent in June, according to Statistics Canada labour market survey numbers.

The figure is down from the 6.1 per cent recorded for the same month last year and the difference appears largely due to a rise in the number of people sitting out the job market.

As of last month, 25,800 people of working age were unemployed but also not seeking work, compared to 23,900 for the same month last year, a difference of 1,900.

In all, 53,900 people were employed in June, up by 300 from the same month last year, while 3,000 were seeking employment, down by 500.
