Insp. Keith Redl was, until Friday, the operations officer for the Prince George detachment, the first mate to commanding officer Supt. Eric Stubbs.

Redl has been with the Mounties for 31 years, most of it stationed in Alberta. His first command duties were at Fort St. John where he was made officer in charge in 2006.

He also served in Ottawa (including two-and-a-half years immediately prior to his Prince George posting) and in some rare RCMP positions. He was an Aide de Camp for Prince Edward for his royal visits to Canada and an Aide de Camp also for Alberta Lt. Governor Norman Kwong.

Redl was a security officer for then-Governor General Adrean Clarkson, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, United Nations secretary general Ban Ki-Moon, the president of Georgia during the Olympic Games in Vancouver, and other federal ministers travelling to countries such as Honduras, Equador, Panama and Denmark.

Redl was the recipient of a Commanding Officer's Commendation for outstanding performance and leadership in co-ordinating security functions for the G8 Summit in Kananaskis in 2002, the Alberta Centennial Medal for outstanding service to the Province of Alberta, the RCMP Long Service Medal with Silver Clasp and the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal for outstanding service to Canada.

He and his wife of 32 years, Laura, have four adult sons, one is a serving member of the RCMP. Redl stays active by training for and competing in the Can-Am and World Police and Fire Games. This summer he and all four of his sons plan on competing in the "Tough Mudder" competition in Whistler.

"Although Keith has only been in Prince George for one year, he has made a significant impact on the detachment," said Prince George RCMP spokesman Cpl. Craig Douglass.

Staff Sgt. Brad Anderson will be acting as the operations officer until Insp. Redl's replacement is named, likely in the fall.
