City's population grows

Prince George's population stood at 75,568 people by the end of 2010 - a 1.2 per cent increase over the previous year. The increase works out to 924 people as well as an increase of 2,678 in the last five years, according to B.C.

Prince George's population stood at 75,568 people by the end of 2010 - a 1.2 per cent increase over the previous year.

The increase works out to 924 people as well as an increase of 2,678 in the last five years, according to B.C. Stats numbers released this week

The news came as no surprise to Initiatives Prince George research analyst Tara Bogh, "just considering the strong employment numbers we've had."

According to year-end labour-force survey numbers, the city's working age population for the fourth year in a row increased to 68,100 in 2010 from 66,200 in 2007.

Bogh could not say where the newcomers are coming from but she expects the trend to continue into 2011

"Although the data does not tell us definitively where people are moving from, we know that people move to a community if it is attractive to them," said Bogh.

"The consistent growth in the Prince George population over recent years really reflects both the economic opportunities and lifestyle advantages in our city relative to other jurisdictions, which continue to make the city a preferred destination."

Looking elsewhere Mackenzie's population declined by 910 people since 2006 and now stands at 3,705. The downturn in U.S. house construction struck the community hard, said Bogh.

"However, we can expect their population to recover over time as things pick up again, as we have already seen begin to happen," she said of the community 186 kilometres north of Prince George.

"New economic opportunities including new mill activities starting up in the last half of 2010 should serve to pump up the economy and draw people back into that community as well."

Elsewhere in the Fraser-Fort George Regional District, population levels were fairly stable.

For the unincorporated areas, the population stood at 15,562, up 331 from 2006, Valemount's was 1,045, up 44 people, and McBride's was 677, a 16-person increase.

B.C. Stats estimates are based on federal Census figures and numbers gleaned from other sources such as telephone numbers and hydro accounts. The next federal Census is set for May.
