The city of Prince George may be throwing their hat into the ring to host a major national conference.
Coun. Cameron Stolz has submitted a notice of motion to be discussed at the Jan. 21 council meeting for the city to submit a proposal to host the 2015 Federation of Canadian Municipalities Sustainable Communities Conference and Trade Show. The federation is currently in the request for proposal stage from member municipalities.
The event would take place two weeks prior to the Canada Winter Games on Feb. 4 to 6, 2015.
In his notice of motion, Stolz said the event would allow the city to further promote its 100th anniversary and accomplishments in the field of sustainability.
Some of these highlights include: the University of Northern B.C. (Canada's 'green university'), the greenhouse gas capture system at the Foothills Boulevard landfill, the city's district energy system and LEED Gold standard on the new RCMP building.
"This is a great opportunity for us to celebrate our successes and promote our city and community to the rest of Canada," Stolz wrote. The conference brings in local government representatives as well as private sector and not-for-profit sustainability professionals.
The FCM requires all proposals to be in by Feb. 1 and a decision will be made when the board of directors meets in Prince George in March.
