City is getting Kids in PG Parks

As the back half of summer creeps around the corner, some of the excitement of being out of school might begin to wear off as children run out of ideas for outdoor adventure.

As the back half of summer creeps around the corner, some of the excitement of being out of school might begin to wear off as children run out of ideas for outdoor adventure.

The City of Prince George has created a program called Kids in PG Parks to encourage children to visit and learn about local parks.

To participate, children pick up a passport for the program at city hall which contains questions about six local parks: Lheidli T'enneh Memorial Park, Duchess Park, Rainbow Park, Cottonwood Island Nature Park, Hudson's Bay Wetlands and Connaught Hill Park.

In addition, participants are encouraged to pick a park not on the list and answer questions about it as well.

Once they've filled in all the blanks by exploring each park it's time to drop the passport off at city hall, or submit them by email or fax.

The passports will then be put into a draw for one of two bicycles sponsored by Koops Bike Shop and Northern Hardware that have each included a $50 gift certificate so the winners can get a helmet to go with their new bike, said Paulette Wilson, a community coordinator with the city

The prize bikes are on display at both stores so children can see what's up for grabs.

All submissions must be in by Aug. 19 and the draw will take place on Aug. 26.

Wilson said some of the children really get enthusiastic with comments in their passports and it offers some great insight into the passport program and the city's parks.

"The children really seem to love it," said Wilson.

"And it's always great to get the kids out in the parks and active. This program is so interactive and many of the parents are saying it's so fun to have a reason to go to the park because the children like to have something specific to do."
