Monday's high winds brought record-setting warmth to Prince George.

By 4 p.m., the thermometer struck 23.6 C, well above the old record for April 18 of 21.1, set in 1913.

Environment Canada meteorologist Lisa Coldwell said the strong winds from the south made the difference.

Gusting to as high as 68 km/h, she said the wind transported warm air from a strong upper ridge that had developed over the western U.S. and southern Canada. And it's source region, she noted, was off the Baja peninsula in northern Mexico.

The trend won't last. Winds from the north will prevail on Tuesday and will bring cooler temperatures. The high is forecast to be 19 C, which is still well above the norm of 14 C, Coldwell said.

She said Quesnel's high was 23 C, just shy of record for the day of 23.3 set in 1897.
