City council are expected to rename Glenview Park in honour of Cpl. Darren Fitzpatrick on July 13.

The park, located on Glenview Drive and Dagg Road in the Hart, is slated to be renamed Darren Fitzpatrick Bravery Park. If approved, the park would become the second bravery park in Canada honouring the sacrifice of Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan.

Fitzpatrick, 21, died on March 20, 2010 after being mortally wounded by a roadside bomb two weeks early. The Prince George resident was serving with the third battalion of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry near Kandahar.

The first Bravery Park was created to honour Cpl. Matthew McCully in Orangeville, Ont., where his mother lives. McCully's father and stepmother live in Prince George.

The renaming was proposed to city council on June 13. A city staff report back to council for Monday's meeting estimated the cost of a new sign for the park at $200.

Additional improvements will be made in partnership with the Hart Community Association, Royal Canadian Legion and Fitzpatrick family, city culture and recreation manager Brad Beckett wrote.

"A Bravery Park provides an outdoor recreational area with the goal of becoming an allergy-free space," Beckett wrote. "The renaming of Glenview Park to Cpl. Darren Fitzpatrick Bravery Park is a positive way to pay tribute to Cpl. Fitzpatrick and all

Canadian soldiers."

Beckett recommended city council approve the change at Monday night's regular meeting.
