Workers were ripping out bars and fixtures at the former Cadillac Ranch cabaret on Tuesday.

The former bar, located at 1380 Second Ave., is part of the parking complex owned by the City of Prince George and operated through the off-street parking reserve fund.

"We are cleaning it up to offer it for rent in the marketplace," city real estate manager Ian Wells said. "We are cleaning it out to a shell so it is available for retail or commercial use. We do not support using it in its current state."

The site has been vacant since April 30, 2009 when city council cancelled Cadillac Ranch owner John Van Oord's lease. The move came after police arrested Cadillac Ranch staff members selling drugs out of the club in February, 2009.

The location had a long history as a cabaret and nightclub, operating under the names The Rock Pit and Midnight Express before the Cadillac Ranch.

At the time the lease was cancelled, Mayor Dan Rogers said the move was strictly, "a business decision."

When asked why it's taken so long to get the property back to market condition, Wells said the plan had been in place for some time.

"It was just the implementation which took some time," he said.

Wells could not provide a cost estimate for getting the former bar ready for market, or a timeline for when the work would be complete.

Proponents for a new nightclub, to be called Coyote's, in the city had considered the location at one point, but are now moving ahead at the former Cineplex Odeon and Good Times Bingo location on Third Avenue.
