Despite a fast approaching deadline, the city has yet to reach its target of ticket sales for its bid for the 2020 Brier.
The City of Prince George set a target of selling 2,020 ticket deposits the Prince George Tim Horton's Brier, at a price of $20.20, by Sunday, April 15. With less than a week to go, organizers are zeroing in on their goal, but still have tickets remaining. If successful, Prince George will submit its bid to Curling Canada by June 30, 2018. The successful bid will be announced in the fall.
"The tremendous support and feedback we have received so far indicates the people of Northern B.C. really want to host this prestigious national event," said CN Centre Manager Glen Mikkelsen, who chairs the 2020 Brier Bid Committee.
"We're within a few hundred, so we are certainly close."
Mikkelsen said the number of e-mails and comments he has received about the bid indicates that there is a groundswell of support.
The Tim Horton's Brier is Curling Canada's men's national curling championship. The ticket deposit reserves a tournament package. A tournament pass guarantees a seat for all draws of the Brier, including playoffs and the final game. It also provides access to the "Brier Patch," the legendary flagship party of the tournament. Ticket prices for the full pass have yet to be determined, but the price for the pass in this year's Brier in Regina was $499.
Should Prince George not win the 2020 Brier, the full price of ticket deposits will be refunded.
Tickets can be purchased online at pgbrier2020.ca or by calling 1-888-293-6613. Purchasers are automatically entered into a draw to win four tickets to the opening night performance of Cirque du Soleil's CRYSTAL on Wednesday, April 25.
