Hockey players practiced at the Coliseum on Tuesday. Fans attending games at the Coliseum will now be able to buy alcohol.

Prince George Spruce Kings fans will join the ranks of the other 16 B.C. Hockey League team spectators who can have an alcoholic beverage at home games.

During Monday night's meeting, city council approved changes to its alcohol service policy, adding the general seating area of the Coliseum as a designated area where liquor can be consumed under a special occasion licence.

Councillors Garth Frizzell and Albert Koehler voted against making the change.

The change was initiated by the team and will allow the club to generate additional revenue through the beverage sales.

As with CN Centre, there will be areas of the Coliseum stands where alcohol won't be allowed.

That's an important provision according to community feedback he's received, said Coun. Murry Krause.

"If you want to take your kids or maybe it's an alcohol-free house and they don't want to have to sit next to people who are drinking," he said.

Mayor Lyn Hall said he was comfortable with the change, given the management and conduct of the Spruce Kings organization.

"It's a family-oriented sporting event and that's been proven over the years," said Hall. "They do a tremendous job in making sure there's adequate controls in place for every piece of their operation over there during a game so I see it would be no different if there's alcohol added to this."
