City council awarded a nearly $1.99 million contract to RJ Construction Ltd. for construction of an office building at the city's 18th Avenue Yard.

Completion of the project is scheduled for Oct. 31, 2012. Once the building is complete, it will allow the city's transportation and utilities groups to finish relocating from the city's Fourth Avenue Yard downtown.

In July city council approved up to $3 million in borrowing for the project. During the alternative approval process for the project only eight people signed petitions against taking the loan.

Relocating city staff and equipment from the Fourth Avenue Yard was one of the goals identified during the Smart Growth on the Ground process in 2009.

The plan calls for a "green corridor connecting the downtown with the river system," to be developed on the site of the Fourth Avenue Yard,

according to a staff report from May.
