City council took the first step towards conducting a core service review.

A core review was a key plank in Mayor Shari Green's election platform. On Monday city council unanimously endorsed a report by Green, which called for city staff to report back to council by January on the scope of work and cost of a core service review.

"What this is... is a look at who will do the work, what the scope of the work is and what the cost will be," Green said.

The proposed mandate of the core service review is to, "identify and evaluate opportunities for expense reduction, new revenue generation, governance and organizational structure," according to Green's report to council.

Councilors Brian Skakun and Lyn Hall said any core review process should be done in consultation with city staff.

"I want to ensure our employees understand where we're going with this," Hall said.

Skakun said staff consultation should be an integral part of any core service review.

City manager Derek Bates said the report which comes back in January will include some of those details.
