Citizen reporter Gordon Hoekstra captured Canada's top award for investigative journalism over the weekend.
Hoekstra secured the Canadian Association of Journalist's Don McGillivray Award for Investigative Journalism for his story Downtown Fix. The Don McGillivray Award is the country's only honour that recognizes the best in investigative journalism in Canada.
Downtown Fix also won a CAJ award in the Community Newspaper category.
"I'm honoured to be recognized in the company of the outstanding Canadian journalists who were nominated and won in their categories," said Hoekstra. "I'm also honoured that this recognition shows that investigative journalism can take place at smaller newspapers anywhere in Canada."
