The Prince George RCMP is going to be welcomed to the neighbourhood courtesy of a downtown church.

Timbers Community Church will be hosting a block party on Friday, June 13, noon to 1:30 p.m., on Fifth Avenue between Victoria and Vancouver Streets, next to the new detachment.

Pastors and volunteers from at least five other churches will also be involved and several businesses have provided donations, organizers said.

As well, a booklet containing letters - and drawings - of appreciation is being assembled. Those who would like to contribute are asked to e-mail contributions to [email protected] or drop them off at the church, 1553 Third Ave., by the end of Monday.

Timbers pastor Paul Berteig said he came up with the idea after hearing some of the negative press the RCMP has received.

"They have a difficult and challenging job, and they deserve our honour and our gratitude," Bertieg said. "We want every member to know that this community loves and supports them, and we appreciate what they do, and the personal sacrifices that they make to serve us all."

The event will include hamburgers and hot dogs and feature a live band led by Stephen Toon.

Others interested in helping out can call Christine Bertieg at 250-561-9277.
