Once you've made the decision on what tree will fit perfectly into your living room, it's important to take care of it to ensure it will stay as vibrant as the decorations through the busy holiday season.

According to the B.C. Christmas Tree Council, here are a few to tips to keep your tree fresh and fragrant:

Check the tree for freshness: This can be done by gently shaking a branch and noticing how many needles fall, or by taking a needle and bending it. It's fresh if the needle snaps cleanly.

Make a fresh cut: If you didn't cut it yourself, cut at least one centimetre off the base of the stem to help the tree absorb water easier.

Don't transport a natural tree on the roof of your vehicle, especially if driving a long distance. Once the tree is home, keep it in an unheated area, or leave it outside away from the sun and wind until it's ready to be brought home and decorated.

Water daily: The tree should be in a sturdy stand, rinsed with water and bleach, with a minimum water capacity of four litres.

Location: Trees (real and artificial) should be placed away from heat sources, such as fireplaces, radiators and television sets. Don't block doorways or exits.

Light it up: Do not use outdoor lights on an indoor tree. Check wires, plugs and sockets on light strings every year, and remember that mini lights produce minimum heat.
