A chimney got a lot hotter than the homeowners wanted, and nearly left them out in the cold.

Prince George Fire-Rescue was called a little past 3:20 a.m. Wednesday to a home on Rustad Road. Three stations sent a total of 16 firefighters to respond. When they arrived they encountered smoke billowing from around the masonry chimney on all sides.

"Smoke was also found throughout the house," said fire chief John Lane. "Fire crews quickly determined the fire was limited to the chimney and the immediately adjacent roof trusses."

It took little time for fighters to address the emergency. One crew was able to return to their hall quickly while the remaining team went to work ensuring all hotspots were properly extinguished.

"The residents had all safely self-evacuated," said Lane, and no injuries were reported due to this incident.

A damage estimate was still being tallied as of press time.
