The annual children's summer reading program starts today at the Prince George Public Library.
The program helps keep skill levels sharp during these lazy days of summer and with all the rainy weather there's nothing better than curling up with a good book to help pass the time.
The kick off for the program starts at 10:15 a.m. with Book a Trip for seven to nine year olds.
Double Digits, for 10 to 12 year olds, runs from 11 to 11:45 a.m. followed by Mini FanCon for teens aged 13 to 18 from 2 to 4 p.m.
Exploring the theme of travel for the seven- to nine-year-old crowd goes every Tuesday from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. at the main branch and at the Nechako branch in the Hart the program is geared for six to nine year olds and runs Wednesday from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m.
For Double Digits children meet every Thursday from 3 to 4 p.m. at the main branch and can take the Summer Challenge geared for 10 to 12 year olds.
There are set tasks children can complete for a chance to win an iPod Nano. So reading three books set outside of Canada, or learning a phrase in any other language other than English offers a chance to win. There are challenge booklets available at both branches of the library.
Children can also enter a draw to win a bike at Storytime Stars for five and six-year-olds Tuesdays from 10:45 to 11:15 a.m. or during Book A Trip. And they can earn entries by reading seven books and returning a complete reading log to either branch.
Mini FanCon is Friday afternoon from 2 to
4 p.m. and geared for 13 to 18 year olds.
"The event was inspired by Northern FanCon and we'll have a bunch of different stations at the library," said Amy Dhanjal, communications coordinator at the library.
"There will be an anime screening and people are invited to dress in costume for the Cosplay contest. There'll be fandom trivia, and we have a bunch of prizes. Game Quest will be here and we'll have a Mario Kart tournament on our big screen and there'll be a photo booth and there will be popcorn and refreshments and it's totally free."
