Charges remain same for fatal sucker punch

Crown counsel remains in the process of determining whether charges against a Prince George man involved in a fatal fight outside a Fort St. John bar will be upgraded.

Crown counsel remains in the process of determining whether charges against a Prince George man involved in a fatal fight outside a Fort St. John bar will be upgraded.

Joel Christopher Marchand, 29, continued to face charges of aggravated assault and assault causing bodily harm, as did William Ted Metcalfe, 25, of Kelowna, following an appearance Wednesday in Fort St. John provincial court.

The family of Chris Ball, 39, of Calgary, has been calling for stiffer charges against the two after he died allegedly from injuries suffered in a July 22 fight outside a bar in the town of 18,600 people 476 kilometres northeast of Prince George.

Ball was knocked unconscious when he was allegedly sucker punched and was taken off life support 11 days later after he was transferred to hospital in Edmonton.

Crown is seeking additional information from police before making a decision, criminal justice branch spokesman Neil Mackenzie said Wednesday.

"We're still waiting for some additional material from the police," Mackenzie said. "They've provided us with some material resulting from their ongoing investigation but there is still some information we need before we can make a decision one way or the other."

Next appearances for Marchand and Metcalfe are scheduled for Sept. 26.

Marchand remains in custody on a detention order while Metcalfe is out on $20,000 bail.
