Chances Are good for finding quality used clothing

For the last nine years Chances Are you'd find a consignment boutique above Books & Company. After two years at Third and Dominion, Colleen Dyson thought it was time to move to a higher elevation at 1685 Third Avenue.

After two years at Third and Dominion, Colleen Dyson thought it was time to move to a higher elevation at 1685 Third Avenue.

Originally Dyson was a legal secretary but felt her creativity was not being expressed, so she went into retail, and after being an employee, she thought she would take on the challenge of becoming a business owner.

In the meantime, Dyson also took a millenary course in order to create uniquely designed hats and clothing items.

Chances Are consignment boutique is packed to the rafters with tops, bottoms, coats, shoes and accessories like purses, hats, and jewelry.

The shop even offers recycled purses from designer USE2B. If you look carefully, you will notice one purse is made from a bright red pleated skirt.

Dyson said despite the downturn in the economy there hasn't been much of a lull in business.

"If anything, I've been a bit busier than before and I think that might be because people are trying to still look good and save money by buying good, used clothing," she said. "I think my location really helps business too. Jim Brinkman owner of Books and Company is so supportive. People will go to Books & Company, have a coffee in Cafe Voltaire or take their kids to music lessons downstairs and they will wander up here to take a look."

Dyson has had a loyal customer base for years, too, that seems to be growing.

Dyson has partnered with Alisa Speed to present vintage fashion shows as charity events over the last several months and will continue to showcase her vintage clothing in that way. Customers are invited to browse at their leisure.

Conveniently, Chances Are is right beside Caribbean Alterations, so if the new-to-you clothing needs alterations, patrons can just walk a few paces to find an experienced seamstress to help customize their new clothing.

Dyson said one of her consistently popular features in the store is the Toonie Bin where everything in the basket is just $2.
