We know what a flash mob is. Now get your wallets ready for the cash mob.
This new benevolent business booster is a spinoff of the popular practice of co-ordinated swarming. Instead of just a big group of people rushing into a public space to cause surprise or make an awareness statement, the cash mob is a call to mass-shop at a chosen business. The Chamber of Commerce is organizing the first one in Prince George is Saturday, and the target is Books & Company sometime between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
"This is yet another way the PG Chamber, and the community, can demonstrate support for the local business community and for the shop local movement," said Chamber CEO Christie Ray. "It's an innovative concept that has been done all over the United States and other parts of Canada, and we wanted to bring that kind of excitement to shopping in Prince George. The Prince George Chamber and Hell Yeah Prince George work together frequently to promote positive engagement for the betterment of the community. This is great example of how we can all help local businesses succeed."
"We are super excited, and really thrilled that this event is taking place on Authors for Indies Day," said bookstore spokesperson Kim Matheson. The store was warned that the cash mob was coming, thanks to a voting process the Chamber undertook. "We can't thank you enough for voting for Books & Company, supporting your local indie businesses, and your local indie authors. You make us so proud to be a part of this community, Prince George. Thank you."
Ray said this kind of targeted shopping couldn't possibly be the difference-maker on any one store's bottom line, nor would it work for every store because some products and services can't be transacted in a rush. The goal of the Chamber is to heat up the attention on local businesses in general, get people participating together in their business community, and give everyone involved a little retail thrill.
"In a four hour period we will mob a local business to demonstrate widespread and cohesive support of the Prince George business community and the Shop Local movement," Ray said. "You are encouraged to spend a minimum of $20 at the store. Show your support for local business and join the mob."
More cash mobs are already in the planning stages.
