Prince George may be better known for 40-below but get ready for some 40 above.

The Chamber of Commerce is set to announce its top 40 business people under 40 years old.

They might be in the trades, perhaps they are entrepreneurs, maybe they are teachers or medical professionals, they could be students or farmers, scientists or accountants but stand out in their profession.

A panel of judges will soon sift through the 60-some nominees to select the final list of local community stars under 40.

"Looking at the list of nominees gave me such a sense of pride," said Jennifer Brandle-McCall, CEO of the chamber. "When people describe the best things about Prince George they will often say 'it's the people.' Well 'the people' have a lot to do with community spirit and retaining the members of our community, and attracting new members of the community, so it's important to highlight the best we have."

The local 40 under 40 campaign is based on similar efforts in Vancouver and other communities in BC.

Brandle-McCall said it has not yet been determined how PG's Top 40 will be grouped or categorized, but there will be no ranking within the list. All will be considered equal within the group.

The class of 2012 will be announced on Sept. 17. That's the day Prince George hosts the coast-to-coast tour of Startup Canada, the national pro-entrepreneur roadshow. Startup Canada will engage a number of events and activities that day, and will partner with the chamber for an early evening showcase to unveil the city's 40 Under 40.

"This initiative is all about how we see ourselves as a community and how we project ourselves as a city," said Brandle-McCall. "When you see who these people are, and you project 20 years down the road, we will be in an even better position then, and these people will be the driving forces."

Each of the Top 40 Under 40 for Prince George will be featured in a publication that will be distributed across the city and around the province.
