One person was killed Thursday morning in a fiery chain-reaction collision just south of Fort St. James.

North District RCMP Cpl. Madonna Saunderson said it occurred at about 9 a.m. when the driver of a car heading south on Highway 27 stopped to turn left onto Airport Road and the driver of a logging truck stopped behind the car.

The trouble started when the driver of a second logging truck rear ended the stopped logging truck and pushed it into the northbound lane where it was struck head-on by another oncoming logging truck, causing it to burst into flames and killing the driver.

The driver of the car, which was sent into a ditch, appeared uninjured and the two other logging truck drivers suffered non-lifethreatening injuries.

The stretch was closed for most of the day as investigators gathered evidence.
