Although it's a little later in the season than in years past, the Northern Women's Centre is still offering the chance for women to take a mid-winter afternoon's break.

The third annual Spa Day takes place from 1 to 4 p.m. at the student union building at the University of Northern B.C. on Saturday.

Normally, organizers like to hold the event prior to Christmas.

"We just got a little busy last semester so we put it off. We just pushed it back a bit and hopefully we will have a good crowd," said Sarah Boyd, executive director of the Northern Women's Centre.

The afternoon is a small affair, with only 40 tickets on offer, to keep the event relaxed, Boyd explained.

"I think it is definitely a feel-good event in many ways," she said. "It's something that's really important for people, I would say particularly, women we don't tend to indulge in self care very often. Even though we're told it's a good thing, somehow we don't allow ourselves that time to take part in some self care or allow ourselves to have someone give you some TLC."

The event is a fundraiser to support the work of the Northern Women's Centre and will offer manicures, pedicures, massage, threading, henna and natural skin care products.

There will also be live music, door prizes and a Nia demonstration. Participants will also leave with their own customized body scrub.

The Northern Women's Centre is a non-profit organization committed to supporting, educating and advocating for the variety of needs of women in northern B.C. It offers information on resources on campus as well as the community and provides a 24-hour safe space for all women in Prince George.

"Even though there isn't a women's centre in the community, there are many women who come up to the university to take part in our events," said Boyd.

"A lot of people think we're just here at the university serving people on campus, when in fact we serve the community

as well."

Tickets are still available today $15 at the university or can be purchased at the door for $20 on Saturday afternoon.

Additional tickets will be given to local shelters free of charge so that women who are especially in need of pampering can also be spoiled that afternoon.

"This is our way of giving back to the community. We are aware of women in the community who are in particularly difficult circumstances who often don't have the time or money for self-care," Boyd said.
