Prince George Astronomical Society will celebrate the stars with a free lecture and sky viewing with the president of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.

Mary Lou Whitehorne will visit Prince George and give a presentation tonight at 7 p.m. at UNBC's Weldwood Theatre located near the bookstore. It will be followed by a viewing at the observatory and the UNBC parking lot if weather permits.

Whitehorn is an internationally known award-winning astronomy educator, curriculum developer and author, and avid observer.

Here's what she'll talk about: "Throughout human history people of every culture have watched and interpreted the stars. Around the globe there is a rich trove of sky lore. We can learn much about ourselves, each other, and our place in the world from this sky heritage.

"Since the invention of the telescope, our knowledge about and understanding of the universe has changed dramatically. This talk celebrates our technical achievements in the science of astronomy, along with the cultural richness of the sky."

"This a rare opportunity to hear someone of Mary Lou's stature and experience in Prince George," said Blair Stunder, vice president, PGAS.
